Vernon Hills  Sledding Hills-  there’s no hiding from Winter…

Mother Nature may have teased us with a snowfree holiday season, but as I write this, the second big snow of the season is falling. The kids aren’t home from school yet, but I know what’s on our weekend agenda – the sledding hill in Vernon Hills.

Children and adults climb the hill with their sleds and saucers, then down they go, over and over. Vernon Hills residents and others from the area take advantage of this free outdoor winter recreation as an opportunity to get some fresh, albeit cold, air. Families who’ve spent summer sport seasons sweating together reunite at the hill, catching up and catching snow.

This terrific sledding hill is nestled fittingly at the north end of CenturyPark in Vernon Hills, at the end of Indianwood Drive. There is a parking lot right near the hill, and a pavilion for in which families can warm up. The Vernon Hills Park District runs a concession stand in the pavilion, letting the kids warm up enough to go out and sled some more.

Sanctuary Point is a single family home neighborhood built by Housh’s Construction. The small community features twenty homes which are not yet ten years old. The size of the average home is over 2600 square feet.

In the heart of Vernon Hills lies the Deerpath subdivision. The neighborhood has over 1200 homes and lies between Route 45 and Route 60. Residents are within walking distance to Hawthorn schools, the Sullivan Center, Aquatic Center, strip malls along Route 60, the Aspen Library, and the Metra station. 

As a centrally located area, the annual 4^th of July parade runs through Deerpath every summer, with viewers lounging along the tree-lined streets. The majority of students in the Deerpath subdivision attend schools in Hawthorn District 73 before graduating on to Vernon Hills High School. There is also a portion of Deerpath which feeds into Lincolnshire-Prairieview District 103, then on to Stevenson High School.

All the hours that kids – and parents! – spend shooting hoops together for fun come together at this annual showdown. Some of the parent-child pairings practice during open gyms at the Sullivan Center, others practice at local Vernon Hills parks, and others just show up on the day of the event. For several hours in one November afternoon, friends compete against friends in this holiday classic.

The event is a great time for the whole family as the crowd cheers on the pairings. Players shoot from the “fowl” line. Each partner gets ten shots, and the team with the most baskets wins. When I think back to when my own three boys were younger, I can’t help but feel for the dads with several kids, all wanting to win! And what’s the prize? Why, turkey of course!

I first encountered the delightful Hawthorn Club in Vernon Hills because of my love of golf. The neighborhood is tucked behind the Vernon Hills Golf Course, a terrific public course. Hawthorn Club is located off of Evergreen Road and Route 45, nestled away from traffic and edged on one side by the golf course.

Hawthorn  Club,  an inviting neighborhood with 276 homes was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. All of the homes are spacious with nice-sized lots. At the back of the neighborhood are a number of “estate” homes, larger models built on bigger than average lots. I always loved taking my kids to fall festivals when they were younger. The beauty of fall combined with the sense of community is a great blend. We loved spending time with new and old friends from around our area. This week Vernon Hills residents will be celebrating fall and Halloween weekend with the annual Fall Fest at the Sullivan Community Center.

Family fun will take place on at this year’s Fall Fest on Friday, October 28 from 6pm to 9pm. There will be a family costume contest awarding a prize to the family wearing the best themed costumes. Weather isn’t an issue for this indoor trick-or-treating event, sponsored by local businesses. Also on hand will be a balloon artist, magician, and a face painter. Last minute party-goers can purchase tickets for $5 at the door the night of the event.
