Vernon Hills & Surrounding Community Doing 5k Dash

Keeping up with the latest listings in Vernon Hills and Long Grove keeps me moving, and keeps me in the loop about area activities. Another activity which will keep a lot of people moving is the October 15 Diamond Dash, a 5K race sponsored by the Diamond Lake Educational Foundation. Joshua Ackerman, President of the newly formed DLEF and a Vernon Hills resident, hopes the kick-off brings in serious runners as well as families and friends looking to exercise together for a good cause. Congregation Or Shalom hosted Community Yom Hashoah Service.

Congregation Or Shalom hosted Community Yom Hashoah Service

On May 1st, the Vernon Hills community came together for a Yom Hashoah service at Congregation Or Shalom located in Vernon Hlls.   Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day  refers to the atrocities that were committed against the Jewish people during World War II.  Students of Congregation Or Shalom read poetry written by victims of the Holocaust, and led the audience in meaningful prayers and remembrance.

During this  service at Congregation Or Shalom, guest speaker, and Holocaust survivor, Cipora Katz spoke about her experiences as a child survivor during World War ll.     At four years old she went into hiding with some family members and hid in a potato silo for 22 months. During this time her mother and sister perished in a concentration camp.   Mrs. Katz emphasized to the Congregation and members of the Vernon Hills community that people should treat others the way we want to be treated, and that hope conquers despair.

The Vernon Hills High School choir  performed songs of poetry written by child victims from the Terezin concentration camp at this Congregation’s Or Shalom’s Rememberence Service.     State Representative Carol Sente was in attendance, along with many other members of the congregation and the Vernon Hills community. It is important to remember the millions of people who were the victims of this terrible tragedy.

Congregation Or Shalom Hosts Community Yom Hashoah Service was written by Haley Hauptman, 8th grader at West Oak Middle School Student and Judy Greenberg, Vernon Hills Realtor

Vernon Hills IL- Sledding and Ice Skating

Vernon Hills IL   Sledding and Ice Skating  Nothing beats it for WinterTime Fun!

I have a confession to make.  I really do not like the winter.   I know, this is a very strange thing to hear from a person that has chosen the Chicago Northwest Suburbs to call home, but there it is.  But for as much as I dislike the cold, sleet and wind there is something magical about new fallen snow.  I dare someone to say that they don’t have at least one wonderful memory that includes snow ball fights, snow angels, sledding and ice skating.  Lucky for us, Vernon Hills offers multiple outdoor ice skating parks and sled hills to help bring those memories back and to create new memories for our kids.

If ice skating is your choice, the Vernon Hills Park District offers four different locations.  The first three can be found at:

  • Evergreen Lake at Deerpath Park, adjacent to the softball field
  • Willow Lake at Deerpath Park, north of the Cherokee Road entrance
  • Grosse Pointe Pond, at Grosse Pointe Boulevard and Hunter Court

The fourth location in Vernon Hills also has one of the best sled hills I have ever seen (and if you’re in the mood for a fantastic work-out, the hill is available for running in the summer).  This Vernon Hills  sled hill and ice skating rink are located at Century Park North, with the ice rink located next to the hill on the basketball court near the sled hill. This ice rink will be lighted until 9:00 pm daily.  The  Vernon Hills park district is currently building a warming shelter/concession stand by the Century Park North ice rink and which should be a great addition to the winter fun.

As always, there are a few safetly rules and approporiate times to be on the ice.  Please visit the Vernon Hills Park District website, http://www.vhparkdistrict.org/parks/skating.asp, for information on when the ponds are open for ice skating and a list of all safety rules.  If you are looking for information on indoor ice skating rinks in Vernon Hills, please see my blog posting on the The Glacier Ice Arena at http://www.vernonhills-homes-for-sale.com/vernon-hills-ice-skating.html  As always; stay warm, stay safe and enjoy a great winter day in Vernon Hills with sledding and ice skating for the whole family.

Girl Scouts Find Badges and More in Vernon Hills, IL

The Girl Scouts Regional Service Center of Vernon Hills Serves Girl Scouts in More than 102 Communities.(written by Tara Arnold of the Judy Greenberg Group)

As the mother of a seven-year-old daughter, I am constantly reminded of the wonderful influence that Girl Scouts can be on a young girl.  In this age where kids seem to grow up faster than ever, its nice to know there is still an organization out there that teaches kindness, community service and helps to grow true friendships.  What I didn’t know until recently, was that there is a Girl Scout service center right here in Vernon Hills that serves over 36,000 Girl Scouts.

Today, my daughter will participate in a Bridging Ceremony as she moves up from being a Daisy to being a Brownie (if you have a daughter in Girl Scouts, you know this is a pretty big deal).  One of the services provided by the Regional Service Center in Vernon Hills is a special facility and assistance for this ceremony along with classroom learning opportunities and tours.

Of course, my favorite part of the Vernon Hills Regional Service Center is the Council Shop.  Seeing all those patches makes me want to put my vest back on just so I can display what can only be described as little pieces of art.  You can also find uniforms, pencils, camping gear, notebooks – almost anything your daughter could possible think of.  And for those mothers like me who don’t sew, they sell this wonderful patch adhesive that requires no sewing and no ironing!

If your daughter is involved in Girl Scouts, take a moment to stop by the Vernon Hills Regional Service Center. There are many active troops in the Chicago Northwest Suburbs including Vernon Hills, Buffalo Grove and Long Grove.  To find a troop for your daughter, please call the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana at 1-312-416-2500
for information about the troops in your area.  And one last thing, don’t forget cookie sales are starting soon (Tagalongs, YUM!).
