Vernon Hills Sledding Hills- there’s no hiding from Winter…
Mother Nature may have teased us with a snowfree holiday season, but as I write this, the second big snow of the season is falling. The kids aren’t home from school yet, but I know what’s on our weekend agenda – the sledding hill in Vernon Hills.

Stone Fence Farms in Vernon Hills
Stone Fence in Vernon Hills
One of my favorite neighborhoods in Vernon Hills is Stone Fence Farms, easily identified by the stone signage and white fence surrounding its fron
tage area. I love the feel of this neighborhood, nestled between two larger subdivisions in the village. The neighborhood is comprised of 177 colonial style homes which were built in 1989. The homes are well-maintained on nice sized lots, and I always see people out chatting or working on their homes when I come by. A homeowners’ association is in place which organizes annual picnics and other neighborly outings. The association is also responsible for maintaining the entrance to the neighborhood. Grosse Pointe Village- Vernon Hills Subdivision
As a succe
ssful Vernon Hills area realtor, my job is similar to that of a matchmaker – finding the right home for my client, based on all of the desirable characteristics my client is seeking. One area I love is the family-friendly Grosse Pointe Village subdivision. The neighborhood boasts over 540 single family homes, two updated parks, three prime baseball fields, tennis courts, walking paths, and terrific schools.
Cheers to Blue 60- Mundelein’s newest Eatery
The Vernon Hills-Mundelein-Long Grove triangle is home to a new restaurant, Blue 60. Owner Steve Itsines named his new venture after his favorite martini and the restaurant’s location on Route 60. I was welcomed into the spacious sports-themed restaurant by the friendly hostess and chose a cozy booth where I could enjoy lunch with a girlfriend.

Interior Decorating in Vernon Hills, IL- LoomCraft a hidden Gem
Loomcraft Fabric in Vernon Hills, IL is a Home Decorator’s Hidden Gem!
Last fall, my husband and I purchased a new home (see Judy’s blog at www.judygreenberg.com for all of the great tips we used during the sales process). It’s a wonderful house, but as with all previously-owned homes, we need to do some redecorating to truly make it our own. In my quest for the perfect curtains, I found out about a little known fabric store in Vernon Hills: Loomcraft.
Loomcraft is located in Vernon Hills, IL at the corner of Fairway and Lakeview Parkway right across from the Girl Scouts Regional Service Center. From the outside, the store doesn’t look like much, but once you step into the building you’re taken aback by all of the colors and patterns in front of your eyes. I’m not much of a sewer, so I was skeptical that I would accomplish much, but I found out from the friendly staff that Loomcraft offers custom bedspread and drapery services (call for qoute). Not only that, but the store has furniture for which you can personally choose the fabrics and upholstery. And if that wasn’t enough, the prices are phenomenal. They even have a “back room” with deeply discounted fabrics that are perfect for pillows or smaller projects.
It’s not often that I would write about a fabric store as being a “hidden gem” in Vernon Hills, but Loomcraft has so much to offer at such great prices that I believe anyone undertaking a redecorating project should make a point to stop by – if for nothing else the fabrics and colors are sure to inspire your creative juices.

Vernon Hills IL- Sledding and Ice Skating
Vernon Hills IL Sledding and Ice Skating Nothing beats it for WinterTime Fun!
I have a confession to make. I really do not like the winter. I know, this is a very strange thing to hear from a person that has chosen the Chicago Northwest Suburbs to call home, but there it is. But for as much as I dislike the cold, sleet and wind there is something magical about new fallen snow. I dare someone to say that they don’t have at least one wonderful memory that includes snow ball fights, snow angels, sledding and ice skating. Lucky for us, Vernon Hills offers multiple outdoor ice skating parks and sled hills to help bring those memories back and to create new memories for our kids.
If ice skating is your choice, the Vernon Hills Park District offers four different locations. The first three can be found at:
- Evergreen Lake at Deerpath Park, adjacent to the softball field
- Willow Lake at Deerpath Park, north of the Cherokee Road entrance
- Grosse Pointe Pond, at Grosse Pointe Boulevard and Hunter Court
The fourth location in Vernon Hills also has one of the best sled hills I have ever seen (and if you’re in the mood for a fantastic work-out, the hill is available for running in the summer). This Vernon Hills sled hill and ice skating rink are located at Century Park North, with the ice rink located next to the hill on the basketball court near the sled hill. This ice rink will be lighted until 9:00 pm daily. The Vernon Hills park district is currently building a warming shelter/concession stand by the Century Park North ice rink and which should be a great addition to the winter fun.
As always, there are a few safetly rules and approporiate times to be on the ice. Please visit the Vernon Hills Park District website, http://www.vhparkdistrict.org/parks/skating.asp, for information on when the ponds are open for ice skating and a list of all safety rules. If you are looking for information on indoor ice skating rinks in Vernon Hills, please see my blog posting on the The Glacier Ice Arena at http://www.vernonhills-homes-for-sale.com/vernon-hills-ice-skating.html As always; stay warm, stay safe and enjoy a great winter day in Vernon Hills with sledding and ice skating for the whole family.
